The Quilcene School Board is set to discuss principal Gary Stebbins’ replacement again at its March 15 regular meeting, at 6 p.m. in Room 9 on the Quilcene K-12 campus.

Although the board met March 1 to discuss how it would go about replacing Stebbins as principal of the K-12 school, Superintendent Wally Lis emphasized that the school district currently is in no position to make any decisions.

“What we determined at that special meeting was that we still need to explore the financial impact to the district, particularly the administrative costs,” Lis said. “We also need to solicit feedback from the community.”

Stebbins suggested that the roles of principal and superintendent for the Quilcene School District could be combined.

Lis expanded on this, identifying “several positions” that the board was considering combining.

“We’d have to consider whether the load of modern administrative duties has changed significantly,” Lis said. “We want to have a pool of high-qualified candidates available, the sooner the better, but to do that, we’ll need to determine what information we should have at our fingertips.”

The K-12 principal position currently earns $103,324.20 for 210 days per year, while the superintendent position currently earns $111,100 for 260 days per year, according to Gena Lont, district human resources and payroll specialist.
