Quilcene meets to discuss health center Aug. 13

Posted
Parents, students and community members are invited to take part in a conversation, Aug. 13 from 5-7 p.m. at the Quilcene Community Center, about bringing a School-Based Health Center to the Quilcene School. The idea is to offer comprehensive health care to students in grades K-12, in partnership with Jefferson County Public Health and Jefferson Healthcare. Similar school-based centers have already been established in Chimacum and Port Townsend schools. The centers would serve students regardless of their ability to pay, and are often staffed with coordinators, nurse practitioners and mental health counselors, with services that can include the diagnosis and treatment of minor illnesses and injuries, management of chronic health conditions, reproductive health, sports physicals, immunizations, and counseling for depression, stress and problem-solving. Attendees can discuss how community partners are working to make a Quilcene health center happen, the successes and challenges experienced by the Chimacum and Port Townsend schools’ centers, and how students from Brinnon, 12 miles distance, might access those services.
