Quilcene home to be moved from flood zone

Posted

A historic home that sits in the floodplain of the Big Quilcene River will be moved, saved and restored after the Jefferson County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved an agreement this week with Mahan Log and Lumber to have the structure moved to a new location.

Paul Mahan of Mahan Log and Lumber has been working with the county since earlier this year to have the house, built in 1920, moved out of the flood zone.

Mahan, a longtime Quilcene resident, has a plan to lift and move the house to a new property about a quarter mile away.

The house is located at 161 Rodgers St. in Quilcene.

The agreement with the county gives Mahan’s company the green light to move the building. The company will also demolish and remove the foundation of the home, as well as a basketball curt and other remnants. The on-site septic system will also be decommissioned.

The company will be paid $36,471 for the work.

The county has tried to auction the house in the past with no success.

County Commissioner Greg Brotherton said the proposal was a great solution.

“It’s a beautiful old house with one of the finest porches in Quilcene, I believe,” Brotherton said.

The cost of the contract is also close to what the county would have spent to just demolish the home and have debris removed.

“I’m really supportive of this project,” he said.
