Quilcene Fire Rescue wants to renew six-year EMS levy

Posted

Quilcene Fire Rescue will ask voters to renew its Emergency Medical Service (EMS) property tax levy during a special election set for Aug. 3.

The Quilcene department, known officially as Jefferson County Fire Protection District No. 2, notified Jefferson County on April 21 that it would like to put the levy measure on the ballot.

The levy needs a simple 50 percent majority vote to pass.

Quilcene Fire Rescue has an existing EMS levy —  passed by voters in 2016 — that will expire in 2022.

If approved by voters, the levy rate would be set at 50 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value.

Property taxes collected from the levy starting in 2023 and would continue through 2028. Revenues will be used to pay for EMS vehicles emergency medical technicians and paramedics, as well as needed medical supplies and gear.

Officials with the fire district expect the levy to cost the owner of a property assessed at $300,000 a total of $150 a year, or $12.50 per month.
