The Rangers quickly collected six runs in a first-inning blast and broke open a 9-4 game in the third to crush the Kings 27-8 in girls varsity fastpitch softball.

Quilcene plated 13 unanswered runs in the third inning to forge a 22-4 advantage going into the fourth quarter of the non-league matchup.

An RBI double by Stormie Elkins got the Ranger offense going in the first inning, which was capped off by eighth-grader Abby Ward’s two-RBI single.

Both Elkins and Ward, who combined for five of the Rangers nine hits, had RBI singles in the third inning as well.

Midway through the fourth inning, three more runs pushed the score to 25-4.

A modest Muckleshoot rally brought four runners home, but the Rangers scored twice more in the fifth to ice the score at 27-8.

Ward finished with 3-of-4 batting and five RBIs.

Elkins went 2-for-5, with two RBIs.

Marissa Kieffer finished 2-for-4 at the plate with two singles and four runs for the Rangers, while Kayla Ward was 1-for-4 and Megan Jones went 1-for-2 with one RBI.

Kayla Ward picked up the win on the mound for Quilcene. She pitched 4 1/3 innings, giving up four earned runs and striking out seven for the win.

Shelby Love finished the game as pitcher (3 ER, 2BB, 1K). She also reached base all six times, scoring five runs on the day.

“Getting a chance to compete for the first time in two years was a great experience for our team,” said Quilcene Coach Mark Thompson.

“We have a young but enthusiastic group of young ladies whose potential I am very excited about,” he added.

The Rangers have a two-week layoff before the team returns to action.

Quilcene is scheduled to play Rainier Christian School Tuesday, April 13 in Auburn.
