Quilcene celebrates at homecoming

Excitement was high Friday afternoon as Quilcene High School students capped off their Spirit Week with an assembly before a Rangers home football game against Evergreen Lutheran and the homecoming dance on Saturday night.

Quilcene Associated Student Body President Pearl Munn was joined on the gym floor by Tammy Thompson, who handles food service, special education and attendance for the Quilcene School District, and they welcomed the cheerleading squad and the football team on Oct. 26.

The homecoming assembly's game involved donning comical outfits and completing absurd physical challenges. Teams of two from each grade level — from eight through 12 — dressed up as either babies or cheerleaders, shook chocolate balls from one end of an oversized rattle to another, popped balloons by sitting on them, and filled other balloons with their breath to use them to blow plastic cups off tables.

The senior team took an early lead in the competition and never relinquished it.

While the cheerleaders performed a choreographed number, and the football players introduced themselves to the crowd one by one, the highlight of the event was the crowning of the homecoming royalty, although they donned carnival-style masks instead of crowns, and some unruly members of the crowd pointed out their sashes read "Prom" rather than "Homecoming."

Nonetheless, Thompson announced each class prince, and then sent him into the stands to retrieve his princess.

Freshman prince Nathan Kieffer found princess Kayla Ward just as sophomore prince Blake Winn fetched princess Aleina Mitchell, and junior prince Max Redmon located princess Lauren McCarthy.

Senior prince Garon Terry's search was brief, since princess Pearl Munn was standing right beside him, and King Brennen Filmer helped Queen Scarlett McBride don her mask before they all posed for photos.
