Three Port Townsend High School cross-country runners are to compete in the state 1A championships Nov. 6 at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.
Senior Brennan LaBrie and sophomore Gabe Petrick qualified for the PTHS boys with ninth-grader Anika Avelino for the girls advanced from the Westside Classic district title meet staged Oct. 29 at , the District 3 at American Lake Veterans Golf Course in Tacoma.
GIRLS’ VARSITY
The six PTHS girls and one Chimacum High School frosh, Rachel Matthes, raced the 5000-meter course in sunny mild conditions early last Saturday afternoon. PT placed fourth out of six teams, reported coach Alice Fraser.
The overall race winner was sophomore Sage Gibson from Seattle Christian with a time of 20:21. Avelino placed fifth overall for PT with a time of 21:42.
“She secured one of the top seven state championship qualifier spots and was the fastest race’s female ninth grader,” Fraser noted.
Avelino was followed by teammates junior Ally Bradley (13th, 23:05), junior Aliyah Parson (15th, 23:07), senior Ari Winter (23rd, 24:01), frosh Skylar Stekly (35th, 34:02), and sophomore Akwe McDaniels (36th, 36:45).
Matthes finished 29th in 26:24 for Chimacum; she scored for Port Townsend during the regular season but in the post season, represents her home school.
BOYS’ VARSITY
The boys’ varsity race followed the same two-loop course and Townsend narrowly missed the single qualifying berth to the state championship meet. The Redhawks placed second with 45 points behind Charles Wright Academy with 49.
“The team came together and raced with a courage and camaraderie unparalleled this season,” said coach Fraser. “They wanted that championship berth so badly and they really went for it. They were simply, but barely, out performed.”
Senior LaBrie (3rd overall, 17:52) and sophomore Petrick (7th, 18:42) took individual qualifying spots for the state competition. They were followed at district by freshman Nathan Cantrell (11th, 19:01), junior Jesus Duran (13th, 19:02), senior River Yearian (15th, 19:03), and seniors Alejandro Montanez (17th, 19:21) and Henry Veitenhans (18th, 19:21).
