The Port Townsend High School and Blue Heron Middle School cross-country teams traveled to The Cedars at Dungeness Golf Course to compete on Thursday, Oct. 19.
The middle school meet was the last of the regular season, and both boys and girls ran a 2-mile course.
The girls’ race was won by Sequim eighth-grader Riley Pyeatt in 12:17, while the top Blue Heron finishers were Adriana Wright, who came in 26th place overall with a time of 18:23, and Samantha Stromberg, who came in 31st with 20:07.
The boys’ competition was won by Stevens eighth-grader Joshua Gavin in 11:30, while Blue Heron’s top male finishers were seventh-grader Michael Petta, who came in 28th place overall with a time of 13:49, and eighth-grader Max Allworth-Miles, who came in 34th with 14:13.
Following the middle school races, the 5K high school Olympic League Championship competitions took place, beginning with boys’ junior varsity at 4 p.m.
“Illness and injury winnowed the PT boys’ JV down to two competitors,” said PTHS coach Alice Fraser.
There were 95 competitors in the race, and North Kitsap senior Timothy Lara won it for the boys in 18:13. PT sophomore Reece Kjeldgaard finished 49th with 21:20, while junior Ben Mattern was 57th with 21:44.
“The girls ran the new one-loop course starting at 4:30 p.m. in chilly conditions,” Fraser said. “North Kitsap freshman Madison Zosa easily won the race at 19:18, with a half-minute margin over second place.”
Port Townsend’s top three finishers were in the top 25 of the meet’s 83 competitors, with senior Ally Bradley, who came in 14th overall, setting a personal record of 22:00.
Sophomore Anika Avelino, who came in 18th with 22:20, and senior Aliyah Parson, 23rd with 22:44, “both had strong races as well,” according to Fraser, as they beat competitors who had been beating them in previous meets.
The PT girls’ team finished sixth out of eight teams in the mixed 1A/2A league.
The final race of the day was boys’ varsity at 5 p.m., which was won by Klahowya junior Lucas Becker in 16:41.
Port Townsend sophomore Nathan Cantrell took second place, with a personal record time of 16:50, and was followed by junior Gabe Petrick, fifth overall with 17:20.
Sophomores Seamus Fraser (26th) and Kincaid Gould (27th) were the next PT athletes, with times of 18:10 and 18:12, respectively.
The PT boys placed fourth out of the nine teams, behind Klahowya, North Kitsap and Sequim.
“We had seven athletes in the race,” Fraser said. “Five of them ran personal records, and one, a seasonal record. It was a successful race and hopefully a confidence builder going into the district championships.”
Only two teams from the district qualify for the state championships. Charles Wright Academy is ranked fifth in the state, and Klahowya just won the mixed 1A/2A league, so Fraser warned that the PT boys “will have to really race smart, and with lot of heart, to challenge for that second spot. The next week at practice, we will spend fine-tuning for that.”

The Chambers Bay Westside Classic Course is the site of the district championships on Saturday, Oct. 28. The boys are set to race at 1:40 p.m., and the girls, at 2:10 p.m. Two teams, and the top 14 individuals, qualify for the Nov. 4 state championship meet in Pasco.
