A 67-year-old Port Townsend woman was flown to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition Feb. 14 after a head-on collision with a dump truck on Hastings Avenue and Ivy Street.
The driver of the dump truck was shaken up but uninjured, according to Bill Beezley, public information officer for East Jefferson Fire Rescue.
The Washington State Patrol is investigating the cause of the accident, which closed Hastings Avenue for several hours after the first call was received 4:25 p.m.
A witness stated that the woman was driving a gray Toyota Tacoma pickup westbound on Hastings when she attempted to pass another vehicle and slammed into an eastbound Seton Construction dump truck hauling an additional dump trailer, according to a press release from EJFR.
After the impact, the dump truck swerved off the south side of Hastings Avenue before overcorrecting, crossing the road and running through a tree barrier of a nearby house on the north side of Hastings, the release states.
The woman required technical extrication from her pickup before being transported to Jefferson County International Airport to meet an Airlift Northwest helicopter.
EJFR Fire Chief Gordon Pomeroy said the woman “had multi-system trauma.”
The dump truck had a ruptured fuel tank and was also leaking hydraulic fluid that required a hazardous material cleanup.
The truck also had significant damage to its front left wheel and suspension, requiring a specialty tow truck from Bremerton to haul it away.
