The Port Townsend School of Woodworking, a nationally renowned furniture-making, carving, and woodturning school at Fort Worden State Park, has implemented a robust scholarship program in hopes of diversifying the fine woodworking community.
A few students have canceled their reservations for select intermediate-level fall courses and the school is seeking to fill these slots by encouraging Olympic Peninsula residents to apply for scholarships as soon as possible. Students will be required to pay the $10 registration fee and any materials fees. Intermediate-level courses require that they bring certain tools, as well. Proof of vaccination or medical exemption is required, and everyone must remain masked while indoors.
Current openings for fall 2021 intermediate-level fine woodworking courses include an Oct. 11 to Oct. 16
class, “Arc Folding Chair,” with Michael Fortune; and Nov. 1 to Nov. 5
“Build a Windsor Chair” with Steve Habersetzer.
There are 10 benches per classroom, and the school holds two benches in each course for scholarship students. The Port Townsend School of Woodworking provides tools for almost all beginner courses. Everyone over 18 is encouraged to apply for a scholarship at ptwoodschool.org/scholarships.
Registration is now open for 2022 courses: courses are full time and typically last one weekend, one week, or three months. Call the Port Townsend School of Woodworking with questions at 360-344-4455 or email info@ptwood
school.org.
The complete course calendar through December 2022 is available at ptwoodschool.org.
The woodworking school is not be confused with the Wooden Boat School, and since July 2020 has experienced no known transmission of COVID among students, faculty, or staff, officials said.
