Pickleball just keeps continuing to grow.
It’s turning into a big dill.
Whether at the national level or locally, the paddle sport has been growing every day with the Port Townsend Pickleball Club reaching a total of 240 members, according to the club.
The organization recently surpassed its capital campaign goal, raising more than $35,000 to convert the pavement platform behind the Mountain View Commons on Blaine Street into pickleball courts. The club raised a total of $38,805 with 106 donors, and construction on the revamp project is currently underway.
Beyond raising funds and expanding its membership numbers, the pickleball club hosted an inaugural doubles tournament at the Port Townsend High School pickleball courts Aug. 27. A total of 10 teams took part in the event.
Mary Critchlow and Bill Dennis’ team took the gold, Erica and Brandon Mack earned the silver spot, and Toni Davison and Rick Kelley finished in third at the tourney.
As pickleball continues to rapidly expand as the sport-of-choice for many in America, the Port Townsend Pickleball Club has plans to expand the amount of indoor and outdoor courts offered in town.
Currently, there are two main pickleball locales in town: two courts at County Courthouse Park on Washington Street, and four at Port Townsend High’s campus on Van Ness Street.
