The temperatures have cooled and the days have grown gradually shorter, but the lady golfers of East Jefferson County are still actively hitting the links through the end of summer and the start of fall.

PORT TOWNSEND

On Aug. 7, the Port Townsend Women’s Golf Club played “Hate ‘Em,” in which each player throws out her two worst holes. The winner was Lynn Bidlake, with a net score of 25 for seven holes, while Betty Gatfield came in second, with a net 27, and Starla Audette was third, with a net 27.5.

On Aug. 13, the game of the day was “Putts,” in which the winner is the player with the least number of putts for the nine holes played. The winner was Starla Audette with 14 putts, while second place was Lynn Bidlake with 17 putts, and third place was a tie between Vicki Young and Dee Sweeney, with 18 putts each.

On Aug. 19, the women played a nine-hole round of “Tombstone,” in which each player is given a number of strokes that’s dependent on her handicap. After the allotted shots are played, the ball is considered to be “dead” — hence the tombstone — and the location of each player’s last shot is recorded. The player who is farthest along before their ball “dies” wins. The winner was Betty Gastfield, who finished with four strokes to spare, while second place went to Judy Munden, who “died” on the green of the ninth hole, six inches from the cup. Third place went to Vicki Young, who “died” on the green of the eighth hole, three feet from the cup.

DISCOVERY BAY

On Aug. 15, the Discovery Bay Women’s Golf Club hosted an annual event called “Home and Home” with The Cedars of Dungeness Women’s Club.

“We paired women from both clubs by handicap, to participate in our annual match play competition, to determine whose team would win the coveted trophy for another year,” Dee Sweeney said, in her capacity as club spokeswoman.

Sadly for Discovery Bay, Cedars of Dungeness won the cup once again, 3.5 to 4.5, in a narrow victory.

“It actually came down to the last putt in inches to determine the winner!” Sweeney said.

The winning team members from The Cedars of Dungeness Women’s Golf Club were Rohani Higgins, Linda Hash, Linda Case, Witta Priester, Marine Hirschfeld, Jan Clendening, Lisa Ballantyne and Lori Wyngeart.

On Aug. 22, the Disco Bay ladies played “Mutt and Jeff,” in which only the scores from the par-threes and par-fives are counted. The winner was Wanda Synnestvedt, with a net score of 28 for eight holes, while second place went to Ann Meier, with a net score of 31, and coming in third was Sheila Kilmer, with a net 31.5. Fourth was Jane Guiltinan, with a net 33.5.

And on Sept. 6, the Discovery Bay Women’s Golf Club is inviting the public to come play in their second annual two-person scramble tournament to help raise funds for the Chimacum High School Girls’ Athletic Scholarship Fund. Players are asked to gather at 8:15 a.m. for a shotgun start at 9 a.m.

“We had a great time last year, and hope that the Chimacum alumni will come out to show their support for this worthy cause,” Sweeney said. “There will be a silent auction, raffle, and putting and chipping contests, with proceeds benefiting the scholarship fund.”

Will and Jane Peoples donated the prize money for this event last year, and have offered to do so again, with cash prizes for low-gross and low-net plus 4 KPs.

Greens fees, plus a $10 entry fee, include 18 holes of golf, followed by a social hour with a no-host bar and a potluck provided by the Discovery Bay Women’s Golf Club. Singles are also welcome, and will be paired accordingly.
