Protests in Olympia against statewide stay-at-home order

An estimated 2,000 people gathered at the state Capitol Sunday, April 19, to protest the statewide “stay home” order meant to dampen the spread of coronavirus.

The protest was one of several demonstrations across the country this week calling for an end to social restrictions designed to save lives and alleviate stress on hospital capacity.

Washington’s stay home order is currently effective through May 4 but could be extended.

Many carried Trump or Gadsden “Don’t Tread on Me” flags and signs, which urged the reopening of the economy.

Multiple Republican state lawmakers attended the rally, with Robert Sutherland of Granite Falls calling for a “rebellion” against the governor.

“We’re starting a rebellion in Washington; we’re not listening to this governor; we’re taking our state back,” Sutherland said.

Gov. Inslee responded by acknowledging the frustration many people feel about this situation but added it will not change the fact that social and economic restrictions are essential to save lives in Washington State.
