I’m a volunteer at the Port Townsend Food Bank where we lovingly distribute food to our friends and neighbors. Lest the conversation get derailed by individuals with an ax to grind, allow me to point out some facts.
Prior to being singled out for scrutiny by said individuals — and flames of discord fanned by this paper — how often did you hear about the Food Bank? We went about our business of feeding the community for over 30 years with nary a criticism. Why the scrutiny now? I daresay because the needs of the community have increased so much we sought to make institutional changes to meet that need. Change scares people, but our town is changing. With growth comes the erosion of the fiber that once bound us more cohesively as a community. Congestion, inflated housing, displacement — all these things add to the need for a safe haven like the Food Bank.
The Food Bank is the spirit of the community. We build relationships while distributing food. We offer solace to people feeling left behind by the pace of development in our town. Help your neighbors, support the Food Bank in any way you are able. Your community will benefit from your generosity and so will you.
