Port Townsend Police Log | Mysterious white baggie

At 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 1, in the 3900 block of San Juan Avenue, a bicycle was stolen from a trailer at the nearby school. It was a Kona bike, and was likely taken sometime during the night while the trailer was left unlocked. The bike was valued at $800.

At 5:50 p.m. Friday, April 1, a homeless man in the 1100 block of Water Street was reported to be rummaging through the back trunk of a vehicle on the street. It appeared that there was a bike in the trunk. The transient was described as a man around 40 years of age with brown hair, a gray jacket, and a neon green hoodie.

Officers arrived and contacted the man, who told them he was working on the bike and it was his. The car belonged to his mother. No crime had occurred and police left the area.

At 8:40 p.m. Friday, April 1, a caller reported a suspicious man with a weapon in the 500 block of Sheridan Street. He was seen sharpening a sword in front of a nearby restaurant.

Officers contacted the man, who was polite and cooperative with them. After a short conversation, the man was asked to move away from the storefront of the eatery.

At 4 p.m. Saturday, April 2, someone in the 200 block of Taylor Street reported to police that an art sculpture in town had been vandalized. Multiple art pieces of the same kind around Port Townsend have been defaced, with the latest being across from Aldrich’s. The caller talked with police and wanted more information on how to better report future vandalism of the art sculptures.

At 11 p.m. Saturday, April 2, a driver at the Haines Place and Sims Way intersection was stopped by police for failing to use a turn signal. The driver showed signs of possible intoxication, and they were assessed with field sobriety tests. The driver was arrested later for driving under the influence.

At 6 p.m. Sunday, April 3, a caller in the 1000 block of 30th Street reported potential mail theft.

The caller had put eight Easter cards in their sister’s mailbox to be shipped to family members. The caller had dropped off the cards and pulled the mailbox flag up, and the next day the flag was down and the mail was gone.

Two of the Easter cards had $10 each in them.

At 12 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, a restaurant owner in the 1500 block of Water Street reported a suspicious baggie with a white, powdery substance on their property.

The baggie and powder was scattered across the restaurant’s parking lot. Officers didn’t test the substance and left the area.

At 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, in the 400 block of Sims Way, a store employee reported a possible domestic violence situation.

A couple in a black car was arguing in the corner of the store parking lot, and the employee told police it looked like it had gotten physical at one point, then was mostly verbal.

Officers arrived at the lot and contacted the couple. Officers investigated and did not notice any evidence of physical violence or assault between the two. No crimes had been committed and the couple went along their way.

At 7:50 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, the same couple was reported in the 1600 block of Sims Way after someone told police a man was yelling at a woman.

Officers arrived to a loud argument between the two, but both told police that the quarrel hadn’t gotten physical. No evidence of physical abuse was seen on the man or woman. Officers advised the two to leave the area so people wouldn’t keep calling them in.

At 1:40 p.m. Thursday, April 7, in the 1400 block of Landes Street, a report was made of an unknown suspect siphoning gas from a nearby pickup truck. They reportedly had stolen around two gallons of gasoline.

Officers arrived and were unable to locate the alleged thief.
