The Port Townsend Police Department received a total of 254 calls between Friday, March 25, and Thursday, April 7. Below are selected reports.

At 11:15 a.m. Sunday, March 27, in the 500 block of Sheridan Street, a man was observed screaming at nobody. A caller reported the situation to police and was worried he might attempt to walk onto the roadway.

The screaming man had a beanie and jacket on and appeared to be walking eastbound. Officers arrived and observed the man walking on the shoulder of the road. He was out of traffic, didn’t appear to be distressed, and no crime had occurred, so officers left the area.

At 8 p.m. Sunday, March 27, a store manager in the 400 block of Sims Way observed a man attempt to steal a shopping cart full of groceries from their business. The shoplifter was described as a man in his mid-20s with brown hair. The manager called police. Officers arrived but were unable to find the man.

Officers told the manager that if the shoplifter comes back to the store, he will be trespassed from the property.

At 4:10 p.m. Monday, March 28, a hospital employee in the 800 block of Sheridan Street reported a suspicious woman at the nearby medical center. The woman was observed entering a bathroom on the property and using drugs. After she left the bathroom, employees smelled an aroma of cannabis coming from the room, and observed pieces of broken glass on the bathroom floor.

Officers arrived, but the woman had already left.

They investigated the bathroom and estimated that the woman had smoked cannabis, as well as another substance, possibly methamphetamine. The broken glass on the ground was likely the result of the woman dropping a pipe or similar smoking device. Hospital staff were advised to clean the bathroom with the highest level of protective equipment.

At 6:30 p.m. Monday, March 28, a man in the 400 block of Kearney Street would not leave a business when he was asked to depart.

The man had been aggressive and was harassing folks in the store. It appeared the man was intoxicated, and a business employee called the police and told them the man had been trespassed from the business before.

Officers arrived and contacted the man, placing him under arrest. The man attempted to flee to a nearby park after he was told he was under arrest, but was caught and sent to the county jail. He told officers that he had no money and admitted that he was looking to steal from the business.

At 6 a.m. Thursday, March 31, an elderly man in the 300 block of Benedict Street appeared to be confused and hopped into a vehicle that wasn’t his. Officers arrived after a bystander called 911, and police contacted the man. He appeared to be confused and wasn’t making any sense. It appeared that the man had some form of dementia, and officers helped him find his vehicle. They contacted the man’s wife who helped take him back home.

At 7:15 a.m. Thursday, March 31, a man in the 900 block of Guice Street reported a woman sleeping in his vehicle. He didn’t want the woman to be trespassed or charged with anything, but just wanted her to move along.

Officers arrived and the transient woman was given resources and officers assisted her with packing her belongings up and moving on.
