The Port Townsend Police Department received a total of 146 calls between Friday, Jan. 13, and Thursday, Jan. 19. Below are selected reports.

At 11:18 p.m. Friday, Jan. 13, a noise complaint was made in the 1000 block of Umatilla Avenue after a nearby caller complained of hearing loud music coming from a “commune” at the end of the roadway.

Officers knocked on the door and found that a house party was being hosted for someone’s birthday. The party-goers were advised to turn the music down.

At 11:50 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, in the 1100 block of Water Street at a shopping center, a caller reported seeing a dog off its leash running around the parking lot. The canine was described as a “very sweet” light brown pit bull with no collar. Officers were able to corral the dog right as its owner arrived. The officers informed the owner that he needs to keep his dog restrained, and the man was released with a warning.

At 10:20 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, a disturbance was reported in the 1900 block of Sherman Street after someone reported hearing screaming and pounding from a neighbor’s walls.

Police contacted the neighbors; a grandmother and her granddaughter. The grandmother said her granddaughter gets upset sometimes and slams the door and hits the wall. Officers talked to the granddaughter and confirmed the story.

No crime had occurred and the officers left the scene. 

At 12:18 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 15, a scooter theft occurred in the 800 block of Water Street.

The scooter owner told police it was chained to a tree, and then disappeared. Worth $700, the Segway scooter was gray and was last seen chained outside Jan. 10, five days before being reported stolen. The scooter owner was unable to provide a serial number. 

At 10:50 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 15, in the 400 block of Sims Way, two girls were seen stealing alcohol from a grocery store. The girls took two bottles of Crown Royal and a third unknown bottle and left in a black SUV.

The store had video of the theft, and officers observed one of the girls taking the booze and leaving without paying.

The girls were confronted by an employee, and photos were taken of the SUV. Officers identified one of the girls, and contacted her and her mother.

The mother and daughter both denied being in Port Townsend at the time of the theft, but couldn’t answer why the daughter was depicted on the store video.

The mother told police she would speak with her attorney before answering any other questions.

At 9 a.m. Monday, Jan. 16, a disturbance was reported in the 600 block of Water Street after a man was seen screaming and standing in the middle of the road, yelling at nobody in particular.

The man appeared to be in his 40s and had average height and weight. Another bystander told police the man was offering drugs to people.

Officers contacted the man, who said he was offering cannabis to people. He was advised to stop. No other crimes had been committed and all parties involved left the scene.

At 12:40 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16, a business owner in the 200 block of West Sims Way told police that tools had been taken from the store, and the owner had video of the theft.

The owner knew the identity of the suspected thief and where he works, but didn’t know his name.

The owner provided a description of the suspected thief’s vehicle. Officers contacted the man at his place of work and placed him under arrest for theft. He provided the stolen tools to the officers. The officers issued a trespass admonishment and cited him for third-degree theft. The man was booked into jail without incident.
