The Port Townsend Police Department received a total of 165 calls between Friday, March 17, and Thursday, March 23. Below are selected reports.
At 8:50 a.m. Friday, March 17, in the 300 block of Benedict Street, suspicious activity was reported to law enforcement.
A hotel guest received an unwanted note left on the door of the hotel room that included a phone number. The hotel guest called the number and spoke with a man. The hotel guest told the man of a lack of interest and to not make any further contact. The man was apologetic.
At 12:15 p.m. Friday, March 17, a theft was reported in the 200 block of West Sims Way after a Carhartt-brand shirt was stolen along with a few other items. The shirt was valued at $21 and after the suspect swiped the items, the thief fled the scene in a silver Toyota 4Runner. Police were provided with photos of the suspect.
At 12:45 a.m. Sunday, March 19, suspicious activity was reported at the Jefferson and 19th streets intersection. A caller reported someone who appeared to be living under a tarp near the visitor’s center.
An officer arrived and located a mound of trash under an empty tent. Nobody was in the area, and the officers left.
At 2 a.m. Sunday, March 19, in the 600 block of Cleveland Street, a noise complaint was made.
The caller reported two people in a hotel room being loud. Officers arrived at the scene and contacted multiple people wandering the hallways. One of the hotel guests told the officers that the only person being disruptive was the caller who made the noise complaint. No disturbance was reported and the officers left.
At 1:20 p.m. Sunday, March 19, a shoplifter was reported in the 200 block of West Sims Way. The shoplifter, a man, is known to police. The reporting party also had photos and video of the shoplifter stealing $42 worth of items from the store.
At 6 p.m. Sunday, March 19, a caller in the
1500 block of Van Ness Street told law enforcement she saw three teens attempting to break into a building in the area.
The teens, one female and two males, were wearing masks and attempting to use a crowbar to get into a chained area behind the high school. The three jumped the fence before trying to get into a brick building on the property.
The teens fled the area after the caller confronted them. Officers arrived and contacted the caller, then checked the building. There were no signs of damage to the brick building, and the caller said she deterred the teens from breaking in or doing anything by confronting them. Officers searched the area for the teens but were unable to locate them.
At 1:15 p.m. Monday, March 20, in the 200 block of Thomas Street, a disturbance was reported to law enforcement. The reporting party said there was ongoing screaming coming from a residence in the area throughout the day, and they believed a man and woman were inside.
Officers drove to the area and knocked on the door. A woman answered, and she told the officers she was home alone and had been yelling during a phone call. Officers checked the area and didn’t see anyone else apart from the woman. The officers informed the woman that a complaint had been made and advised her to lower her voice.
