The Port Townsend Paper Company was fined more than $4,000 for the amount of carbon monoxide emitted into the air in November.

According to a release from the Washington Department of Ecology, the department issued $151,025 in penalties for the second quarter of 2018. The penalties documented in the report included agencies statewide receiving penalties of $1,000 or more from April to June of 2018.

“Ecology works with thousands of businesses and individuals to help them comply with state laws,” the press release stated. “Penalties are issued in cases where non-compliance continues after Ecology has provided technical assistance or warnings, or for particularly serious violations.”

The Port Townsend Paper Mill was issued the citation Feb. 1, and was the only facility in Jefferson County to receive a violation in the second quarter.

The description of the penalty stated, “Release carbon monoxide about the amount allowed by their air quality permit in November 2017. The limit is based on a 30-day rolling average and the limit was violated on three days during that month.”

Ecology noted the fine at $4,500 has been paid.

“The money owed from penalties may be reduced from the issued amount due to settlement or court rulings,” the release stated. “Funds collected go to the state’s general fund or to dedicated pollution prevention accounts.”
