Port Townsend City Council looks at roundabout project

The Port Townsend City Council was scheduled to vote to approve a range of improvements to the Kearney Street/Sims Way intersection during the city council’s Tuesday meeting.

The improvement project hinges on the city collaborating with the Washington State Department of Transportation, and both entities have already been working together to develop a design for the future intersection.

The four-way intersection will be converted to a roundabout with the right turn road from Kearney to Sims — one side of the “triangle” in front of Chase Bank — being entirely changed to a bike lane.

The project will also add a rain garden on the west side of  Kearney near the intersection, the extension of a bike lane to the roundabout from Kearney, and other improvements.

The intersection project will cost an estimated $551,400, with construction starting in April or early May.

The work will require detours around the intersection and some temporary closures with detours, according to the city.

Work will be suspended during the Rhododendron Festival in May.
