Port Ludlow Art League announces November's featured artists

The Port Ludlow Art League has announced its artist and jeweler of the month for November.

The featured artist is Janice Gruber, who group officials called “a gifted artist who uses her oil, acrylics, brushes, and palette knives to depict subject matter with strokes of color, simulating reflected light.”

She’s able to transform a conventional bouquet of flowers into a beautiful garden on a perfect summer day, or a couple of boats tied up to a dock into the sound of boats gently rocking against the dock in a light breeze, the league noted.

Gruber’s work can be seen at the Sound Community Bank or online at www.portludlowart.org.

The jeweler of the month is Maggie Smith.

Smith has been making beads and designing jewelry for more than 25 years, officials said. She got her inspiration for lampworking after visiting Andrea Gurino, an award-winning artist, at her Port Townsend art studio. And, after taking one of Gurino’s classes, Smith was hooked.

Smith then went on to hone her talent by attending art classes at the Pratt Fine Art Center in Seattle. She is currently a member of the International Glass Bead Society.

Many of Smith’s art pieces are a collaborative effort with her daughter, Shelby, and she prizes extemporaneous results.

“When I work with glass, unexpected things just happen,” Smith said.

Smith’s work can be viewed at the Sound Community Bank and online at www.portludlowart.org.

People interested in purchasing any of the artwork from the league’s featured artists can make an appointment to meet Gruber or Smith at the Port Ludlow Art Gallery by calling 360-301-9840. The gallery is next to the Sound Community Bank, located at the corner of Oak Bay Road and Osprey Ridge Drive in Port Ludlow.
