The Port of Port Townsend will hold their annual meeting in Quilcene on March 13. The meeting will take place at 5:30 p.m. at the Quilcene Community Center. The port owns and operates the Herb Beck Marina in Quilcene. “The subject of the meeting will include selling parts of Quilcene facilities, but not the marina,” said port interim director Jim Pivarnik. Pivarnik said Coast Seafoods, which leases a building at the marina is hoping to buy the building. “Selling the building to them could get us the cash we need to upgrade the Quilcene facility,” Pivarnik said. “It’s probably in the worst shape of all our facilities. It’s the smallest and it generates almost no income.” Pivarnik said he is preparing for a discussion with Quilcene community members about the marina. “The marina is a recreation area for the community and the county altogether,” said Anne Ricker, who lives in Quilcene. “The port looks at it from a financial point of view and think that it out to be profit-making. But one of their obligations is to maintain and create recreational opportunities.”   Ricker said she is worried about the possible sale of the building to Coast Seafoods, who she said have had issues with water contamination. Last year, the Quilcene Beach was closed July 18 because enterococcus, a type of fecal bacteria, averaged over 600 per 100 milliliters of water, according to a press release from the county public health department. Ricker and some members of the community are working on a petition for the port to reconsider the vitality of the beach and the marina. “If 100 citizens make some demands, the port has to respond,” Ricker said. “The Quilcene beach is one of the only swimming beaches in Jefferson County.
