The new Dollar Tree store at 22 Christney Road in Port Hadlock is about to open based on signs on its window and doors. Doors open on Thursday, Feb. 20, with official grand opening events planned for Saturday, Feb. 22.
Plans filed with the Jefferson County Department of Community Development called for a one-story, 10,500-square-foot building with 30 parking spaces. The store sits on a 1.3-acre lot at the intersection of Christney Road and Ness’ Corner Road, across from Burgers Landing.
Members of the surrounding community voiced concerns last spring about feeling blindsided by the business going in.
A spokesperson with the Department of Community Development told The Leader in March 2024 the project was approved without prior public notice, and before the sewer was installed, because it was considered an allowable use under the parcel’s pre-existing zoning.
“They applied for a building permit and it was granted,” Michael Byers, a community development technician with the Jefferson County Department of Community Development, told The Leader.
“The property in question is designated ‘Rural Village Center’ under the transitional rural zoning for the Urban Growth Area (UGA) until sewer service is available,” Chelsea Pronovost, administrative services manager for the Jefferson County Department of Community Development, also told The Leader at the time.
Pronovost added, “Prior to the commencement of construction activities, the applicant diligently engaged in several preparatory measures. These included participation in a customer assistance meeting and a pre-application conference, alongside obtaining relevant permits.”
While there are only two Family Dollar store locations in Washington, in Darrington and Davenport, there were 93 Dollar Tree store locations across the state before Feb. 20, but no others in Jefferson County.
A Fortune 200 company, Dollar Tree, Inc. is two brands — Dollar Tree and Family Dollar — with 16,000 stores in 48 states and five Canadian provinces.
According to the Family Dollar website, the company places stores “in neighborhoods and ‘food deserts’ where other stores choose not to locate, providing a convenient, close-to-home option where customers can shop for essentials.”
