Between Jan. 1 and Jan. 8, officers responded to 220 calls, including four 911 calls, 9 calls about harassment, and they made 64 traffic stops.

Not all calls generate a written case report. The Port Townsend & Jefferson County Leader went over the calls with Chief Michael Evans on Monday, Jan. 9. Among the reports and incidents, including some from previous weeks, were:

A police officer new to the Port Townsend Police Department was on duty Christmas Day, Dec. 25 and was summoned to respond to a call of an intoxicated man at a downtown establishment. The officer learned the man had been driving a Pontiac Grand Am and so drove the street looking for the motorist. A 20-year-old inside a car fitting the description was found slumped over the wheel of the car with the windshield wipers on. The officer noted it was not raining. There also was an open bottle of beer in the center console and a six-pack in the backseat, according to the officer’s report. The man was asked to perform some tasks and was stumbling while also allegedly resisting arrest and shouting profanities. A second officer arrived to assist. The suspect was taken to Jefferson Healthcare and then cleared to be taken to Jefferson County Jail. While in custody, the man allegedly spat on corrections officers and threatened them, according to reports. It was recommended that the man be charged with driving under the influence and fourth-degree assault for kicking officers.

Two planters were broken in front of a landscaping business on Sims Way between Dec. 26 and Dec. 27. Damage was estimated at $300. It appeared someone in a truck drove into the planters.

Sometime between Dec. 27 and Dec. 28, someone took $50 worth of bike parts from The ReCyclery and tried to get into an area that was off limits.

A transient man was arrested Dec. 28 on a warrant issued in King County for failing to appear in court on a third-degree assault charge.

A 21-year-old Port Townsend man was arrested on suspicion of fourth-degree assault after he allegedly drove his wheelchair into his mother and pinned her legs against a couch on Jan. 4.

A motorist was observed weaving over the double yellow lines on Water Street on Jan. 5. Officers stopped the driver, observed that he had blood shot eyes and was slurring his words. The suspect had a .133 BAC (blood alcohol content) and was arrested for driving under the influence.
