The Port Townsend Police Department responded to 258 calls between Nov. 27 and Dec. 4, 2016, including 4 burglary calls, 3 calls about harassment, 11 reports of suspicious activity and 75 traffic stops.

Port Townsend Police Chief Michael Evans sat down with The Port Townsend & Jefferson County Leader to go over reports that were available, which included:

Four men were reported knocking over signs, mailboxes and newspaper racks at 5:19 p.m., Nov. 22 on Washington Street between Pierce and Harris streets. Police also discovered a storm drain cover had been thrown over a bluff and a stop sign had been knocked down. A witness positively identified all four men as having engaged in mischief. One of the young men was from Jefferson County, another was from Langley, and two were considered transients. An officer arrived and discovered that one of the men, who was 21, had a warrant out for his arrest for failing to appear in court. Three of the men agreed to take breath-alcohol tests and all three tests came back above the legal limit to drive, although it's not clear if they had been driving, police said. All were charged with third-degree theft, malicious mischief and criminal mischief. Disorderly conduct and reckless endangerment charges also were recommended by responding officers.

Housemates were involved in a disagreement over beer Nov. 27 that resulted in one of the people being arrested. The incident occurred on the 800 block of 19th Street. A 26-year-old man wanted a 38-year-old man to buy beer from him, and the man refused. The younger man reportedly shoved the older man. The younger man broke down a door and started breaking things up, the older man said. The 26-year-old was arrested on charges of fourth-degree assault and malicious mischief for breaking the door.

A student selling gift cards at a grocery store on Sims Way to benefit a wrestling team reported Nov. 29 that a white Spaulding bike he had put out on a front rack before entering the store was gone when he went to leave at about 9:30 p.m. He initially thought friends were messing with him, but learned they weren't, so he called police.

There was a verbal altercation between a man and a woman in the 1100 block of Third Street on Nov. 29 that escalated, with the man grabbing the woman around the waist. With the help of another woman, the victim was able to call police for help. The 37-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of fourth-degree assault. The woman was given information about how to obtain help.

A burglary in progress was reported at 9:36 p.m., Dec. 1 by a woman in the 500 block of U Street. A woman said a man was trying to get into her home through the back door. Responding officers found a man inside the woman's car, which was parked in the carport. The man was a 35-year-old transient who had done some odd jobs for the woman. He was arrested for attempted burglary, vehicle prowl and obstructing an officer. An officer indicated the man appeared intoxicated.

Employees of a drive-through restaurant in the 300 block of Sims Way reported at 12:40 a.m., Dec. 1 that they were concerned about a woman yelling at them through the drive-through window and were afraid to leave for the night. An officer responded; the suspect was gone upon the officer’s arrival.

A transient woman known to police was reported Dec. 1 by passersby to be making threatening statements about beheading people and talking to an imaginary person. Contacted by officers, she asked to go to Jefferson Healthcare and was taken there without incident.

A man was said to be screaming at a clerk in a downtown store at 3:35 p.m., Dec. 2. He was banned from the business, essentially admonished not to return to the store again.

An officer on patrol noticed a man walking near Mill Road at about 5:49 a.m., Dec. 4. The man's shirt appeared to be bloody and the man was wearing only one shoe. The man told the officer he had been involved in an accident on Cape George Road. The officer drove the man to his vehicle, concluded the accident had occurred in the county and called the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office to assist. A deputy subsequently arrested the man on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. The man's other shoe was found in the vehicle.
