The Port Townsend Police Department responded to 243 calls for service between March 13 and March 19, 2017. Among them were 8 calls about suspicious activity and 5 calls reporting fraud. There were 102 traffic stops.

Among the incidents that officers responded to, according to a press release from the city, were:

A homeless man screaming at an employee at a business on Cleveland Street was reported at 1:48 p.m., March 15. The suspect was asked to leave, but reentered the business and refused to leave. He was arrested on charges of criminal trespass and taken to jail.

An officer responded to an address on Tyler Street at 4:15 p.m., March 15 to investigate reports that a youth had been assaulted by a classmate. The victim told the officer he was being picked on in school because he stood up for a friend whom the suspect had been making fun of. The victim also said he was encouraged to fight the suspect, which resulted in him sustaining a bloody nose. By the time the officer arrived on scene, the suspect had left the area on his bicycle. The officer was asked by the victim’s father to speak to the parents of the suspect and to notify the school. He did not want to pursue a criminal charge.

On March 15, an officer issued a citation for trespassing to a man who was following employees around the halls of Jefferson Healthcare and sitting in the waiting room “mean-mugging” employees. The suspect had previously been issued a trespassing citation.

A man called 911 to report a person sleeping in the doorway of a building he was attempting to enter to clean. An officer responded to the location on Water Street at 6:15 p.m. on March 15. The suspect, who had been sleeping in boxes in the doorway, was issued a trespass warning.

Two men were reported to be harassing customers at a business on Kearney Street at 11:13 p.m., March 17. One of the suspects made sexual comments and exposed himself to employees, officers were told. When officers arrived, the two suspects had left the area, but were found several blocks away. Both were issued trespass notices. Approximately one hour later, the person who made the comments and exposed himself to employees was back at the Kearney Street business and exposed himself again, officers were told. When officers approached him, he resisted arrest and then was taken into custody. He was transported to Jefferson Healthcare for evaluation, then taken to jail.

Officers were called to a residence off Willow Street on March 18 to reports of a man making threats to kill himself and threatening to kill his wife.The man was reportedly suffering from an illness and was transported to Jefferson Healthcare by East Jefferson Fire Rescue.

An officer was called to the city dock where a male was found sleeping in the handicap stall in the restroom on March 19. The man was told to leave the restroom and issued a trespass warning. He told the officer he was leaving town as he thought he had worn out his welcome.

At 1 p.m., March 19, officers responded to an area off Howard Street, where a man was found with a bicycle he allegedly found in the bushes. He had an unrelated arrest warrant and was taken to jail on the warrant.

Police were called to the county fairgrounds on March 19 to a report that a man was hearing voices from an old friend. Upon arrival, officers did not find anyone else in the RV with the man .  Officers did not detect any alcohol or drug use, and the man declined medical help. He told officers the voices were gone and he was fine.

Police were called to a residence off Landes Street at 6:30 p.m. on March 19 after a man reported finding a grenade on the beach at Fort Worden. The Washington State Patrol Bomb Squad was called to the area and took possession of the grenade.

At 7:50 p.m., March 8, an officer responded to the parking lot of a store on Sims Way where a car had been struck while the reporting party was in the store. The front bumper of the struck vehicle had nearly been torn off. The driver of the vehicle that hit the car was found to be driving without insurance and was issued a notice of infraction.

Officers were called to a dock off Water Street at about 2:25 p.m., March 9 after receiving a report that a male was seen smoking marijuana in public. The 19 year-old male was given a notice of infraction and released.

On 6:15 p.m., March 9, officers were called to a building near Benedict Street, where a transient male had been sleeping outside. The reporting party told officers this was an ongoing issue. “No Trespassing” signs had been posted. Officers issued a one-year trespass ban to the man for camping without permission. The ban is for the entire area around Benedict Street.  The man was then removed from the property.

An individual went to the police department at 9 a.m., March 10 to report receiving voice messages of a threatening nature from a person who said he wanted to punch him in the face. The reporting person did not want to pursue prosecution, but wanted the threats to stop. He also told the officer he was planning to seek an anti-harassment order from the courts. The officer taking the report called the suspect, who admitted to making the calls in a moment of anger. He was told it was a crime to make such threats, and the officer explained harassment laws to the suspect.

Officers responded at 6:26 p.m., March 10 to a building on Hancock Street where a man was found sitting on a bucket, covering his face. The reporting party was concerned the man was a transient and might try to enter the building before it was secured for the night. Officers approached the man, who apparently had been drinking alcohol, and asked him to leave the area. Officers picked up the bucket and asked the man what he had in it. He did not respond, but attempted to grab the bucket back from the officer, who put the bucket back on the ground. The officers declined the man’s request to give him a ride to a location downtown.

A report was made at 6:30 p.m., March 11 to JeffCom 911 about a male harassing customers at a business on Kearney Street. The male suspect was yelling at a customer he insisted was wearing his coat. At the request of the business, police issued a trespass admonishment to the suspect.
