The Port Townsend Police Department responded to 212 calls for service between April 24 and April 30, 2017, including 2 911 calls, 5 burglaries, 3 incidents of driving while intoxicated, 2 incidents of domestic violence, 1 report of fraud, 1 report of theft and 81 traffic stops. The following were among the incidents reported:

Police responded to an area on Tyler Street at 7:15 p.m. on April 24 to a complaint about a vehicle parked in a disabled spot with no placard displayed. A citation was issued.

At 10:45 p.m. on April 26, an officer took a report from a local business owner who reported receiving a fraudulent traveler’s check for $100 on April 22.

Police stopped a bicyclist on Water Street at 7:10 p.m. on April 26 for biking through a red light without stopping or slowing down. The cyclist was issued a warning and reminded that bicyclists had to follow all traffic laws.

At 9 p.m., April 26, officers responded to a residence near Gise Street where a physical assault had occurred. Upon locating the man suspected of the assault, officers took him into custody. The victim of the assault, who said the suspect also had taken her cell phone, had bruises to her face and neck, but she refused medical attention. She had two children in her car when the incident occurred. The suspect was arrested for assault and transported to jail.

Officers responded at 3:20 p.m. on April 27 to a report of two vehicles in the parking lot of the Goodwill store, where the vehicles’ occupants were attempting to get into the drop box outside the store. The reporting party said it appeared something had been taken from the box. A man was seen walking in the area and carrying a metal object believed to have been taken from the drop box. Two suspects were stopped. Both were arrested for burglary, malicious mischief, trespassing and multiple warrants. A third person, a passenger in one of the vehicles, was also taken into custody. All suspects were transported to jail. Extra patrols were conducted in the area after evidence was discovered to suggest there had been additional burglaries from other nearby businesses.

Officers were called to a business on Fourth Street at 2 p.m. on April 27 to take a report from workers who discovered that tools and a safe had been taken. The front door of the business had been pried open the night before. Photographs were taken and a report filed.

At 2:50 p.m. on April 27, police received a phone call from the principal of Port Townsend High School, who reported that two subjects in the area had been leaving boxes of Bibles on the city right-of-way leading to the stairs of the school’s main parking lot. The boxes were on city property, and the officer explained the boxes could not be removed by the school as they were not on the school’s property. The subjects were allowed to collect the boxes and then left the area.

A woman was arrested at approximately 4:15 p.m. on April 27 after she was found slumped over the steering wheel of her vehicle and it was determined that she had been abusing inhalants. She attempted to drive away, but was detained and subsequently transported to jail. The vehicle was impounded.

On April 28 at 5:20 p.m., police were notified by a woman who had found a bag of mail left in her living room by her son. She originally thought her son had stolen the mail, but she later said she thought her son had been collecting the mail and bagging it up to return to the post office.

Police were notified of damage to city property in the Howard Street traffic circle at 8:55 a.m., April 29. It appeared there had been a collision near the circle. Vehicle parts and paint chips were collected, and police are to check with parts suppliers and body shops in the area as the investigation continues.

A female shopping in the Goodwill store was seen throwing clothes around and acting strangely at 1:50 p.m. on April 19. The store manager called police to escort the woman out of the store. The woman left the store. The woman appeared to be under the influence of some narcotic substance. Later that same day, the woman was found wandering in the roadway near Howard Street. The woman’s family was contacted to provide assistance.

During a foot patrol near Kah Tai Lagoonat 6:55 a.m. on April 30, an officer found a man and a dog camping in the park. The officer explained the law about camping in a public park, and the man said he was just passing through the area and had no intention of staying overnight again. The man and his dog left the park.

At 8 a.m. on April 30, police issued a trespass citation to a man who was asking customers in a restaurant on Washington Street for money to buy coffee and cigarettes. The man previously had been told multiple times to leave and not return. The man was banned from the restaurant for one year; he left the area without incident.

Police were called to Fort Worden at 2 p.m. on April 30 to help locate two juvenile males seen wearing masks and scaring people near Kinzie Bunker. Officers met with park rangers and conducted a foot patrol, but did not locate the juveniles.

On April 30 at 5:40 p.m., officers received a report from a local food market about two brothers who previously had been asked to leave the premises and not return. The reporting party requested that police issue trespass citations to both juveniles.

Police responded to an address on Water Street at 5:45 p.m. on April 30 to a report of an assault. After talking with the victim, who said that the man who assaulted him had left the scene, police located the suspect and took him into custody. The suspect was taken to Jefferson Healthcare, where he was cleared for transport to jail, where he was booked for assault.
