Port Townsend Police Department officers responded to 202 calls between Aug. 11 and Aug. 17. Among those calls were 4 animal complaints, 1 burglary investigation, 3 incidents of domestic violence, 8 reports of thefts and 2 reports of threats made. Officers made 65 traffic stops. The following are descriptions of some of the incidents:

Officers responded to a residence on Eddy Street at 7:50 p.m., Aug. 11 after a woman reported that her 14-year-old son had observed someone attempting to enter their home. The boy only saw a person’s hand at the door, and a neighbor reported seeing someone in the backyard along the fence line. Extra patrols of the area were requested by the homeowner.

On Aug. 11, a resident on V Street reported an attempted break-in after midnight on Aug. 10. The reporting party saw a man walking around the house, trying the doors of the residence. The resident requested police schedule extra patrols in the area.

At 1:20 p.m. on Aug. 11, an officer stopped a vehicle near Gaines Street because of an obstructed license plate. The driver was issued a citation for using a cell phone while driving and a warning for the obstructed plate.

Police responded to a report of suspicious activity at a residence on Sherman Street at 11:10 a.m. on Aug. 12. The reporting party’s 12-year-old daughter said a white car had pulled into the driveway and then followed her as she walked her dog. The driver, a man with a black beard, rolled down the window of his vehicle. A large dog was reported to be in the backseat of the car. The vehicle circled the block several times. An officer patrolled the area, but was unable to locate the vehicle.

At 4:25 p.m. on Aug. 12, officers responded to a report of suspicious activity at the Boat Haven, where a man was seen stumbling along with what appeared to be a gun sticking out of the back of his pants. When police arrived on the scene, the man was found sleeping in a van parked next to his car. Officers spoke with the man, who was very intoxicated, and found a wood-handled knife in the van, not a gun.

At 7 p.m. on Aug. 12, officers responded to an area on 11th Street where a man and a woman were involved in a verbal argument. The woman had a guitar held over her head and appeared ready to hit the man with it. The man said the woman had tried to run him over with her vehicle. Another woman said the female suspect had smashed the windshield of her car with a bicycle. Police arrested the female suspect, who was wanted on a felony warrant. She was taken to the hospital for an evaluation and transported to jail.

Police received a report from a guest at a motel on Benedict Street at 10 p.m. on Aug. 12 who said an intoxicated female was sitting outside on a bench, singing loudly and swearing. When officers arrived, the woman was leaving the area and told police she was just singing.

At 11:20 p.m. on Aug. 12, police received a report from a resident near Howard Street that a small bathroom window had been broken in her house. The window, located about 10-15 feet above the ground, was too small for anyone to crawl through and only the outside pane of glass had been broken, perhaps by a rock when the lawn was mowed the day before. There was no evidence that a crime had been committed. The reporting party also said that a bike was found on a trail near her home, and her son had brought it to their house, where it was seen on the side of the residence.

Officers responded to a business on Washington Street shortly after midnight on Aug. 13 after a person reported hearing someone yell “no.” The reporting party, an employee of the business, said an alarm was going off and she was unable to disable it. Police located a man who had left the scene. He was intoxicated and laying in a field, and he stated that he was mad and wanted to yell. He was advised to move along, and he complied. Officers returned to the business and stayed until the reporting party finished her work and left the business.

At 9:45 a.m. on Aug. 13, police responded to an area on Calhoun Street where a man was found suspended by his seatbelt, hanging out of his car. The man was not responding to attempts to wake him, and medics were called to evaluate him. The man told officers he was currently homeless and hadn’t slept in days. He was advised not to drive his vehicle, and he agreed to comply.

Police responded to the fairgrounds at 1:40 p.m. on Aug. 13, after a man was heard yelling obscenities and threats to people in the campground from an apartment building behind the campground. Officers spoke with the man, who was out on his balcony with a large sign that read “Bless the Cow,” in opposition to the cow/calf roping at the fair. He made no threats, just expressed some strong opinions.

At 4:10 p.m. on Aug. 13, police responded to an area near Haines Place where a woman reported seeing another woman with a stolen bicycle. Officers learned that the bike was not stolen, but borrowed by the woman from the free bike area at the port so she could go and get a prescription filled. She was advised to return the bike, and she agreed.

A woman contacted police at 4:20 p.m. on Aug. 13 to report that a man had been acting violently, running around her property and then going under the house. The man had left the scene before police arrived. Officers were told by the reporting party that she and the man were separating, and he was upset because she had her relatives at the house they both owned. The man was yelling loudly and cursing, and had allegedly been heard throwing items around downstairs in a part of the residence that was reportedly the man’s exclusive area. No damage was found. Police provided the reporting party with an incident number, should she need to apply for another protection order. Later that night, the man returned to the residence and threatened to assault the woman. After attempting to resist arrest, he was transported to jail and booked for harassment, domestic violence and obstructing a law enforcement officer. Police provided the woman with an information packet highlighting available resources she could contact.

At 7:55 a.m. on Aug. 14, officers were called to a residence on Quincy Street where a man reported a man and woman accessing a trail from his property and yelling at one another. The subjects had been camping in the area for the past two weeks. Police found the subjects’ campsite behind the fence north of Memorial Athletic Field, on private property. A suitcase and duffle bag were found. The subjects had left the area, and officers were unable to locate them.

A plumbing truck struck the side of a privately owned bus near Haines Place at 11:25 a.m. on Aug. 14, cracking the side mirror on the bus. A man standing in the bus sustained minor injuries when the collision occurred. He refused medical aid. The bus owner and his family are living in the bus and told police they would be leaving town in the next couple of days. The driver of the plumbing van gave the bus owner money to repair or replace the mirror.

At 9 p.m. on Aug. 15, an officer’s vehicle was nearly struck by a skateboarder who was traveling down Fillmore Street toward Washington Street at a high rate of speed and failed to stop at a stop sign. The skateboarder hit the curb, crashed and nearly went over the embankment. He refused aid, and the officer sternly warned him about failing to stop and about skateboarding in the downtown area.

At 7 p.m. on Aug. 16, police stopped a vehicle traveling on Discovery Road at 50 mph in a 25-mph zone. A bicyclist was near the roadway when the driver went by. The driver was issued a citation for speeding and second-degree negligent driving.
