Since he moved to Port Townsend in 1972, Steven R. Johnson has documented everything that has caught his eye on film. The prolific photographer and painter is especially interested in railroads and ships. “I am kind of known for doing freight train (photos),” he said. “I rode the rails a lot and wrote a book about riding the freight trains, ‘Here Among the Sacrificed,’ with Finn Wilcox in 1984. It was a fantastic underground book.” Several of such photos taken during the past four decades currently are on display at the Owl Sprit Cafe, 218 Polk St., in Port Townsend. The art can be viewed and purchased during regular business hours, 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. The photos and paintings are on permanent rotating display through spring. “I have free rein of that wall, and to change things,” Johnson said. “I come in at 9:30 a.m. and put something new up or whatever. It is kind of in progress, the changes. I am going to keep adding pictures that go all the way to the bathroom in the very back.” When taking photos, Johnson said he snaps whatever elicits emotion. “I get excited about something,” he said. “I see something, and I can see a picture. Last week, I had to photograph (a) new bell that they are making for a meditation hall in town. When I got there to take the pictures, there were five of us, and it was hard to take pictures. But there were hands on the bell, and I thought, that’s it! The hands on the bell was what got me. I took 95 pictures in about an hour of these guys.” For more information, call 360-385-5275.
