The USNS John Glenn (T-ESD-2) slips into Port Townsend Bay on Monday, Dec. 12 and moors at Naval Magazine Indian Island. The John Glenn is a U.S. Navy expeditionary transfer dock ship named after a former U.S. Marine Corps aviator who, in 1962, became the first U.S. astronaut to orbit Earth. Glenn died Dec. 8. The ship is designed to support three military hovercraft. As an auxiliary support ship, its role would be as a seagoing pier for friendly forces in case accessibility to onshore bases is denied.
