A 36-year-old Puyallup man was killed when he was struck by a SUV while he was walking in the roadway on Highway 104 just west of the Highway 19 intersection early Sunday morning.

Elijah B. Benbow was wearing all-black clothing when he was hit by a 2004 GMC Yukon that was heading east at 2:43 a.m.

A 42-year-old Tukwila man was driving the SUV, according to the Washington State Patrol. The driver was not injured.

The highway was shut down for three hours after the collision, which happened about eight miles west of the Hood Canal Bridge.

Benbow’s next of kin was notified of his death by a chaplain with the Puyallup Police Department.
