‘Peak Port Townsend’ holiday doings

Just in case you’re casting about for distinctive ways to celebrate the holidays, the following are a few seasonally themed offerings I’ve stumbled across while assembling the community calendar each week, ranging from the iconic to the iconoclastic:

• Nan Toby Tyrrell, who specializes in the American songbook and is a fixture of the local arts scene, will play one of her holiday piano concerts at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5, at Arrow Lumber, 8457 U.S. Highway 20.

• Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival World Tour brings its go-big-or-go-home ethos to town with the annual compilation of films about mountain sports, mountain culture and mountain people. Doors open at 6 p.m. and films start at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6, and Saturday, Dec. 7, at the Port Townsend Uptown Theatre, 1120 Lawrence St.

• The World Beloved: A Bluegrass Mass and Songs of the Season at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6, at the First Presbyterian Church of Port Townsend, 1111 Franklin St., and on Sunday, Dec. 8 at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 45 Redeemer Way, Chimacum.

• Wild Rose Chorale caroling in the streets from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, in uptown and downtown Port Townsend, before the Main Street tree-lighting and Santa’s arrival on the Kiwanis Choo-Choo Train at 4:30 p.m. at Haller Fountain, followed by the “Reindeer Region at the Legion” event from 5-7 p.m. at Marvin G. Shields Memorial American Legion Post Hall 26, 209 Monroe St. The latter event will feature wood ornament-making and other crafts, refreshments, caroling, elves and visits with Santa, with donations for the ornaments going to PT Artscape, to help fund arts in the schools. You can even write cards to veterans, to wish them happy holidays.

• The community tree-lighting for Marrowstone Island at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, at the Nordland General Store, 7180 Flagler Road, with music courtesy of the Unexpected Brass Band, followed by Santa’s arrival by boat to the Nordland General Store at noon on Sunday, Dec. 8, followed by pictures with the kids, with proceeds going to benefit the local food banks.

• Holiday open house from 3-6 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 11 at the Jefferson County Library. Enjoy refreshments and live acoustic music by guitarist Trevor Hanson, and create seasonal crafts while listening to Barbara Sjoholm read from her translation of “By the Fire: Sami Folktales and Legends.”

• Christmas caroling in Brinnon at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 15. Meet to carpool at the Brinnon Community Church, 52 Church Drive.

• “Escape the Arctic!” Teen escape room from 2-3:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 27 in the Jefferson County Library. Teens are invited to combat the chill of the arctic, as they work together to solve puzzles and complete this escape room challenge. Space is limited, so register soon online at www.jclibrary.info, or call 360-385-6544 to sign up.
