On writing letters

Posted

I have been thinking about the importance of writing letters and planting seeds. Sometimes it seems that all I can do is write a letter to thank one of my friends for leaving a bowl of soup at my door or sending a hand-made collage postcard.

Some part of me knows I can send a check to the animal shelters or Friends of Fort Worden or other non-profits who keep open.

Going to the bakery or farmers market is also a rare opportunity to support local farmers who give us the nutritious vegetables and plants we need.

But most of all I have been thinking about the meaning of essential and know that the air, sunlight and water are essential for us to thrive and grow. Then there are the more subtle things that make our lives joyful: a rainbow, a dog wagging its tail and waiting for its walk, a scoop of chocolate ice cream, a novel you read again, a call from your son or daughter. A newspaper filled with births and photos of whales and beaches and kids laughing and playing.

Right now this is what I want to remember. There are always surprises and fleeting moments of beauty and wonder if you awake and look around and listen.

That is why I take time to write a letter or mail a card.

The freedom to express ideas and feelings is crucial for each of us.

I am grateful for the doctors and nurses who meet their patients each day with hope. That is a blessing too.
