Olympic Peninsula Salmon Derby begins March 13

The annual Olympic Peninsula Salmon Derby in Gardiner is set to take place March 13-15.

Fishing starts at dawn on March 13, as anglers from across the Olympic Peninsula compete to catch the biggest salmon for a first-prize award of $10,000.

The derby has been held for more than 40 years and is the oldest participating derby in the Northwest Marine Trade Association’s Northwest Fishing Derby Series.

March 11 is the last day to purchase tickets to participate. Proceeds from the derby go to community scholarships and services. Last year, the proceeds helped pay for lighting at the newly constructed helipad at Diamond Point Airport, scholarships for students at the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding in Port Hadlock and support for the Gardiner Community Center.
