Helen June Walters

Port Townsend

June 24, 1923 – Apr. 23, 2017

Helen June Walters was born in Port Townsend on June 24, 1923 to Elma Peterson Crutcher and Frank Crutcher. June was the last survivor of a large, well-known Port Townsend family, and was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Melvin “Fuzzy” Crutcher, Neva Mosley, Mildred Grondahl, William Crutcher, Ivan Crutcher, James Crutcher, Margaret Bumgarner and Jean Bumgarner. Married at the age of 18 in 1941 to the love of her life, Marshall E. Walters of Chimacum, he too preceded her in death.

June is survived by her two sons, M. Reed Walters and Paul J. Walters; their wives, Bonnie and Marianne; grandchildren Kelly Walters Card of Portland, Oregon; Mark Walters of Port Hadlock; Jessica Ellis of Chimacum; Brenda Walters of Florida; Kimberly and Christina Walters of Chimacum; and numerous great grandchildren living in Jefferson County, Oregon and Florida.

June was just 17 and an usher at the Rose Theatre when she first met and fell in love with Marshall Walters. They married on June 28, 1941 and lived in wedded bliss for the next 68.5 years. They continued to live in the Chimacum and Port Townsend areas all of their lives, raising their two sons. June was renowned throughout Jefferson County as the best pie baker of them all. Her pies were the talk of the town and featured at Cotton Lane’s uptown restaurant in the 1960s. While June spent most of her life caring for her family and home, she had a brief period of time working with “Old Doc Chuljian” in uptown PT as his dental assistant, a position she loved because it brought her into contact with so many people.

June prided herself in keeping a loving home filled with beautiful antiques, lovely glass and paintings. Her favorite pastimes were browsing Victorian Home magazines for new inspirations on how to spruce up her home and making delicious cookies.

June passed away peacefully in the company of her two sons at Victoria Place on Sunday, April 23. Marshall passed away on December 5, 2009, and June never recovered from that loss. Now they are together forever. No services are planned. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice Foundation for Jefferson County, 2500 West Sims Way, Suite 300, Port Townsend, Wash. 98368.
