Affectionately known as Tutu to her family, Eleanor Garret Smith was born May 16, 1929 in New York. She moved to Quilcene, Wash. in 1937. Eleanor met Homer S. Smith, Jr. at the University of Washington while they both attended school. They were married in Quilcene, Wash. on March 19, 1950. They had six children (two daughters and four sons). Her daughters are Elaine Grimm of Port Townsend, Wash. and Patricia “Trish” Hohenberg of Kennewick, Wash. Her surviving sons are Homer S. Smith III and Gregory Smith of Port Townsend. She was preceded in death by two sons, Arthur and Brian Smith, both of Port Townsend. 

The Smiths lived in Quilcene and moved to Port Townsend in 1972. Eleanor was a deacon and member of the Quilcene and Port Townsend First Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the Miriam Circle and an honorary member of the Port Townsend Rotary Club. Eleanor and her husband Homer co-founded the Homer Smith Insurance Agency. Homer died Nov. 4, 1999 just four months short of their 50th anniversary. 

She is survived by her sister, Nancy Brown and 12 grandchildren: Michelle Hohenberg and Melissa Koe of Kennewick; Kathy and Stephanie Smith of Seattle, Wash.; Homer Smith IV of Gig Harbor, Wash.; Ryan Smith, Stephen Grimm and Baylee Smith of Port Townsend; Heidi Waltenbaugh and Bob Grimm of Billings, Mont.; Derek and Shawn Smith of Phoenix, Ariz. She is also survived by 13 great-grandchildren.

A memorial will be held Sunday, Jan. 15, 2017 at 3 p.m., at the First Presbyterian Church of Port Townsend, followed by a Celebration of Life with a “Toast to Eleanor,” to be held at 4 p.m. at the Port Townsend Yacht Club.
