The Northwind Art School at Fort Worden Historical State Park is expanding its offerings to 14 classes, with deadlines to meet minimum attendance numbers fast approaching.
“People can enroll in these classes at any time, as no applications are involved,” Northwind spokesperson Diane Urbani said. “But if a class doesn’t have three or four sign-ups 10 days before it begins, there’s a possibility it will be canceled.”
Urbani noted that teaching artists need time to order and gather supplies, and some teachers are traveling from out of town.
“If a class does have those three or four sign-ups by 10 days before, we can continue taking sign-ups all the way until the night before the class starts,” Urbani said.
On Thursday, March 20, from 4-5 p.m., “Adult and Child Art with Heart” will have kids aged 6 to 17, accompanied by parents, grandparents, aunts or uncles. They will make three-dimensional “portrait portals,” under the instruction of Dana Sullivan and Kate Lovejoy, if enough students sign up for $35 each by Monday, March 10.
On the Fridays of March 21 through May 9 from 5:30-7:30 p.m., Anne Pfeiffer will offer the eight-week “Fundamentals of Art: A Comprehensive Approach.” This course is intended to impart a deeper understanding of how fundamentals apply in art, architecture, graphic design “and other aspects of life.” The course costs $340 and people should sign up by Tuesday, March 11.
On the Saturday and Sunday of March 22-23 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Nonie Gaines will offer the “Foundations of Drawing: Level 1” weekend workshop, The cost is $260 and students should sign up by Wednesday, March 12.
“People at all skill levels are welcome, and all supplies are provided in this course,” said Urbani. She added that Gaines will teach “the eight-step process of drawing three-dimensional subjects, with an emphasis on form, depth, value and texture.”
On Sunday, March 23, from noon to 3 p.m., Port Townsend quilt artist and teacher Barbara Ramsey will start “Open Sew and Quilt,” if enough students sign up for $25 each by Thursday, March 13. The monthly series is intended to allow quilters to work on their projects in an informal setting, share feedback if they choose and ask questions about their work.
