If you’ve ever aspired to artistry or craftmaking, the Northwind Art School is offering a slate of classes over the next month or two for those in search of a new pursuit or wanting to build on existing skills.
A variety of new classes — for beginners, professional artists and those in between — are opening up for enrollment now at the nonprofit art school at Fort Worden State Park.
“Our school is a place to learn something new, develop your skills and connect with other creative folks,” Northwind spokesperson Diane Urbani said. “Our participants range from teenagers to older adults, and people who don’t consider themselves ‘artists,’ but they come and have a great time.”
One student, Vicki Legman of Port Townsend, spoke glowingly of a sculptural assemblage class she attended recently.
“There is a childlike joy in it,” Legman said. “The classroom was completely silent because we were all so into the process.”
More than 40 courses and workshops are scheduled, with signup information available at northwindart.org online, including:
• The Bunker free teen art studio from 4-5:30 p.m. every Friday, with the parental permission form available at northwindart.org/pages/bunker online.
• Intermediate watercolor painting with Suzanne Lamon on Wednesdays from Feb. 26 to March 19.
• “Drawing Portraits: A Progressive Process” with Anne Pfeiffer on Mondays from March 3 to April 7.
• “The Pansy Palette” queer art night with Makenna O’Keeffe on Wednesday, March 12, from 6-8 p.m.
• “Fundamentals of Art: A Comprehensive Approach” with Anne Pfeiffer on Fridays from March 21 to May 9.
• “Foundations of Drawing: Level 1” with Nonie Gaines from March 22-23.
• Open sew and quilt with Barbara Ramsey on Sunday, March 23.
Urbani noted that more offerings for adults and youngsters are being scheduled throughout the spring, including a number of new courses in metalsmithing and jewelry art, at Northwind Art School’s new jewelry studio at Fort Worden.
“Our teaching artists include April Ottey, Sarah Calautti and Carin Jones, all of Port Townsend,” Urbani said. “These classes have been popular, and the one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces people are making are absolutely dazzling.”
