New venues added for 30th Chimacum Arts & Crafts Fair

The 30th anniversary of the Chimacum Arts and Crafts Fair, the largest such event in Jefferson County, is supplemented by displays at two adjacent venues.

Promoted as the “Chimacum Holiday Weekend,” the Dec. 10-11 event includes more than 100 arts and crafts vendors inside the Chimacum High School commons and gym, 91 West Valley Road. All of the products are handmade. Admission is $3 per person, or $2 if you bring a can of food. Hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on both days.

New this year, across State Route 19 at the Chimacum Grange, look for vendors featuring woodworking, woolen goods, country art, candles, jewelry, live music and whimsy for all ages. Admission is by donation. Hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Across West Valley Road from the school parking lot, the Tri-Area Community Center is hosting an array of crafts, antiques and flea market finds. Admission is free; hours are 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

OPENING CEREMONY

A craft-fair opening ceremony is set for 9:45 a.m., Dec. 10 outside the high school entrance. Join the crowd for the second annual community portrait, to be taken by David Conklin aboard an East Jefferson Fire Rescue ladder truck. Free coffee and doughnuts are available for the first 200 arrivals. Prints of the community photo are available for sale at the Chimacum Corner Farmstand and Farm’s Reach Cafe.

Lower Elwha Klallam tribal member Sonny Francis offers a blessing song prior to the ribbon cutting. Once doors to the fair open, members of the Fighting Instruments of Karma Marching Chamber Band/Orchestra, along with members of the Chimacum High School Marching Band, parade through the school.

STUDENTS BENEFIT

The Chimacum Arts and Crafts Fair partners with the Chimacum, Quilcene and Port Townsend school districts to support a wide range of student needs that may otherwise be unfunded. Student groups, associated student body officers, music programs and leadership development programs are among those to benefit, according to fair organizers.

It is estimated that more than $400,000 has been raised in the past 30 years to help student programs and projects.

“It’s wonderful having our youth involved and benefiting from the success of our events,” said Flavia Heineman, board president for the Chimacum Arts and Crafts Fair.

Along with the three show venues, Chimacum businesses welcome visitors with special deals this weekend at Finnriver Orchard & Cider Garden, Chimacum Corner Farmstand, Farm’s Reach Cafe and Chimacum Cafe.
