New reporter joins team at The Leader

Nick Twietmeyer has joined the newsroom at The Port Townsend-Jefferson County Leader.

Twietmeyer has covered breaking news, court cases, education, health, environmental issues, business and many other topics during his time as a journalist. His work has been featured in the Bainbridge Island Review, Seattle Weekly and numerous other local newspapers throughout western Washington.

Soon after graduating from the University of Washington’s journalism program, Twietmeyer returned to the family farm in Hansville, located at the northern tip of the Kitsap Peninsula.

“I’m very pleased to join the staff here at The Leader,” Twietmeyer said. “My family has history here in town, my grandfather was born here and my great-grandfather operated a business here in the early part of the 20th Century. I’m eager to have the opportunity to share the unique stories of the folks who call this special place home.”

In his pre-COVID days, Twietmeyer liked to spend his free time getting outdoors and surrounding himself with nature, taking backpacking trips, fishing and camping along with his wife, Sam, and their dog, Rooney. He also enjoys taking on small carpentry projects in his spare time and has been working to restore a Young-built Poulsbo boat in his barn.

“We really do live in a remarkable place here,” Twietmeyer said. “I think it’s hard to notice until you leave and see that not everybody gets to take in the views of the mountains and the water all day, every day.”
