Mythological Horses to release new album

Mythological Horses is moving in a new vocal direction with its latest album, “YYYMF!”, which it will showcase for Port Townsend fans on April 5. If you’re wondering about the change, one clue is that singer Shawn Holley sucked down a lot of “Fisherman’s Friend” throat lozenges in the studio. The menthol and anise disks are a favorite of anglers and other outdoorsmen who need a balm against harsh weather. The album was recorded by Tad Doyle at a secret lair in the Seattle area called Witch Ape Studios, said drummer Jest Commons, who lives in Port Townsend. “While recording vocal tracks, Tad would keep pushing me to do another take if he didn’t think the take was strong enough,” Holley said. “Our good friend Ben Rew came into the studio each day and fed me Fisherman’s Friend,” Holley said. “Rew taught me how me how to strengthen my vocal chords and project my voice.” The album will be released by Hovercraft Records on April 5. An album release show is planned for 8 p.m. April 12 at Sirens, 823 Water St. in Port Townsend. “The style of the new album is pure rock ‘n’ roll,” Holley said, adding the band wants to rock the socks off the audience during the release party. “Port Townsend has always been important to Mythological Horses,” he said. “We have been playing the Boiler Room for over a decade, and the Port Townsend kids have grown up with us. We have a deep respect for the people in Port Townsend and we want to give them our all.” Commons said the band worked seven hours a day, seven days a week to record the album, adding he had to make the commute back and forth between Port Townsend and Seattle each day. But the experience was worth the trouble, Commons said. “Honestly, it’s the knowledge I acquired by working with everyone who was involved on this project. It was unlike any other studio experience I have had.” The least enjoyable experience was the ham sandwich breaks, Commons joked.
