My FedEx Guy

I try not to get carried away with ordering stuff online but Amazon Prime makes it awful easy and fun with no shipping charge.  I never know if the packages will show up in my mailbox or via the UPS truck or FedEx delivery. I’m often reminded of little Ronnie Howard in the 1962 Music Man movie when the whole town sang about Wells Fargo bringing something special. Love that movie.

My FedEx guy is my son-in-law, Wayne.  I used to feel sorry for him in the winter when his territory reached all the way to Forks and he often dealt with bad weather and long hours.  The other night he stopped in with a pizza (bless his heart!) and asked to borrow some dog biscuit as he was out, and would need them tomorrow at work.

This got my curiosity up and I asked for stories. Seems the dogs on his route recognize both him and the sound of his truck.  His own dog, a yappy little dachshund named Sammy, often stays here with me and I was aware that he would start quiet little yaps when the mailman or any delivery truck drove by on the street.  I thought he was just being weird.

Wayne told me sometimes he needs a dog biscuit to toss across the yard to distract a dog that doesn’t appreciate company. He uses this diversion so he can get up to the door with his delivery. Other dogs are super friendly and greet him enthusiastically as they know he has treats in those pockets on his pant leg. They often won’t settle down until he produces that biscuit.  One little wiener dog on his route obviously rules the roost as he has his own couch. He’ll be snuggled under blankets and stick his face out just enough to receive the biscuit before retiring back underneath again.

The other day, a black German shepherd named Ebony, hopped up into Wayne’s driver’s seat and wouldn’t be coaxed down.  Wayne wasn’t sure if he wanted to go for a ride or was just trying to prove he could sit anywhere he wanted to.  Ebony also was in charge of any and all boxes that came into his owner’s house.  He loved to tear into that cardboard box with everything he had so his owner now lets him have at it.  If the box is large, the dog tears it open with his teeth. If it’s small, he gets the box after the product has been removed.  He also insists on a dog biscuit from the delivery guy.

I could never be a FedEx driver. I like dogs but I’m still a little intimidated by them too. Whenever Wayne returns home at the end of the day, Sammy is up on the couch, tail wagging, and waiting for that biscuit in the pocket of Wayne’s pants. Cracks me up every time I see him dive in snout first.
