Mountain View Pool reopened for swim team

The city of Port Townsend has reopened the Mountain View Pool for the Port Townsend High School swim team, but the public will have to wait until the pool staffing increases before they can dive in.

Last week, the Port Townsend City Council voted unanimously to give the go-ahead for City Manager John Mauro to move ahead with a $35,000 contract to have an outside organization come in to manage the pool.

Below minimum staffing levels will mean that the pool can only be used by the swim team until more staff are brought in and trained in safety protocols and operations procedures.

“We’re very excited to get the team back in the pool,” said Port Townsend School District swim coach Peter Braden. “We appreciate all the work the city’s done to get our kids back in the their home pool.”

“Staff have been phenomenal during this very challenging time,” said Port Townsend Public Works Director Steve King.

“We’re walking through every detail and upping our game so we’ll be ready for the public as soon as we possibly can,” he added. “I appreciate the community’s patience as we commit to safety as our main priority in reopening.”
