I am a very proud member of the Community Build team that is putting together Pat’s Place — a tiny shelter project for our unsheltered neighbors. We recently had an open house that was a huge success and we were so pleased to be able to show off our shelters to the community.
One thing I realized while talking with guests at the open house is the misinformation that seems to be floating around. This is not a tent encampment. These are wooden shelters; eight singles and two doubles, along with a kitchen/commons area and bathroom/showers. Any of us would be pleased to show you around so if you see us working at 2135 San Juan Ave. (Evangelical Bible Church property) we would be happy to show you around.
The site where we are moving these beautiful little structures was offered to us by the owner who contacted Bayside Housing & Services. He wanted to make sure the land would be used for affordable housing.
That began the negotiations. Bayside has leased the property for two years and hopes to be able to raise the funds in that amount of time to put up 24 apartments.
Like Peter’s Place in Port Hadlock, there is a strict interview/vetting process for each potential resident. There is no alcohol or drugs allowed and there will be strict quiet hours enforced.
These are just a few of the questions I heard.
If you have any further questions, I know Bayside Housing & Services will be happy to respond as well as the Community Build team at info@community-build.org.
We’d also be more than happy to have your help so please feel free to volunteer! Go to www.community-build.org and click on volunteer.
