At the Feb. 3 city council hearing on the comprehensive plan, Mayor Faber expressed anger that older, established residents of the city aren’t supporting affordable housing. His anger was both misplaced and unjustified. Almost everyone who spoke out against developing the golf course in Camas Prairie Park also testified that they support the goal of providing more housing.

But as long as developing parkland is the mayor’s preferred affordable housing strategy, he simply isn’t going to enlist many more supporters. It’s just going to antagonize more and more of his constituents, which isn’t a winning political strategy no matter the issue. Indeed, because there appear to be many other options for affordable housing, if the city really insists on cannibalizing parkland, its strategy is already a failure.
