East Jefferson middle school wrestlers amassed more than 20 victories during their fourth North Olympic League wrestling meet in Sequim.
A total of 18 wrestlers from Chimacum, Port Townsend, and home school participated in the March 16 competition.
“Over the course of the evening, we competed in 36 matches and won 21. It was another productive night for our team with some thrilling matches that came down to the last couple of seconds,” noted Coach Logan Massie.
Several athletes were highlighted for showing up big during the meet.
“Silas Morford defeated an opponent from Port Angeles that had pinned him earlier in the year. Our team cheered so loud during the final moments of that match,” the coach added. “Silas was behind by one point with less than 20 seconds remaining, and he managed to put his opponent on his back and pin him with literally 2 seconds remaining in the match. What a wonderful display of an athlete competing through the whistle.”
“Josh Yearian is a seventh-grader who attends Blue Heron. He competed in his first pair of matches this week,” Massie said.
“He earned five takedowns in his matches, which was very impressive. He has a strong double leg take-down that is pure effort,” the coach continued. “Josh has shown a will to win that excited his team-mates. After finishing his matches, he told one of his coaches that he can’t wait to wrestle again.”
“Lincoln Barnes is a Blue Heron sixth-grader who earned two wins by pin at this event. Lincoln literally explodes on his opponent when he is on top. He is able to jump from move-to-move quickly, which has shown to tire out his opponents very quickly,” Massie said.
The fifth wrestling event of the season will be hosted by the East Jefferson team from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 23 in the gym at Port Townsend High School.
Team captains for the event will be Oliver Ingersoll, a seventh-grader from Chimacum, and Silas Klontz, a Blue Heron seventh-grader.
The middle school wrestling season will
wrap up with a tournament in Port Angeles set for March 30.
