The Port Townsend and Chimacum Middle School wrestling team competed in 36 matches and finished the evening with a 19-17 winning record during their second wrestling event of their season last week in Port Angeles.
“These athletes support one another so much,” Coach Joe Banks noted afterward.
“This year the coaches are all making teamwork a priority,” he added. “It has become the norm for half the team to be cheering on each match mat side.”
The team’s coaches called out a handful of athletes to highlight for their strong performances.
Chimacum eighth-grader Carver Roberts advanced to 4-0 on the season in his first year of wrestling.
“Every day at practice Carver shows up with a can-do attitude and appears eager to learn. He has been chosen to be one of our two team captains this next week. He earned this honor by setting a great example for his team with his consistent work ethic,” Banks said.
Port Townsend seventh-grader Kaleb Kruse won both of his matches in the matchup at Port Angeles.
“Kaleb has an extremely high level of motivation that is unique amongst middle school athletes. His sheer will to succeed helps to make him very coachable. Last week Kaleb shattered the seventh-grade PT School record for push-ups with 72,” the coach added.
Chimacum seventh-grader Gracee Liske routinely wrestles opponents that weigh 15 pounds more than her.
“She displays ferocious resolve going against bigger competition and is one of the hardest workers in our room.”
Port Townsend sixth-grader Savannah Grimm continues to amaze.
“Savannah is 2-2 on the season and she was impressive with her performance last week,” Banks noted.
“All the coaches are excited to see what moves Savannah will decide to display with each match,” he added. “Savannah has shown us all in the last two weeks of competition an independent streak that brings a smile to all the coaches faces. She competes her way, she wrestles her way, and she wins her way. We are all so excited to continue to watch her excel.”
Port Townsend-Chimacum wrestlers will have a home meet Wednesday, March 23 in the gym at Port Townsend High School. The action starts at
5 p.m.
