“Voting is a core tenet of our democracy. If you could vote in the 2024 election, what issue would most influence your vote?”

That question, put out as part of the League of Women Voters - Jefferson County essay contest, was open to all East Jefferson County high school and home-schooled students, and 60 students participated. The essays were judged using a blind panel to ensure that the judges did not know the name or school affiliation of the students. Essays were judged on content and style, and a proctor tabulated the scores from each judge to determine the winners. Sitka Vicha of Chimacum High School won first place and $150, while Calliope Mosher, also of CHS, took the $100 second place. Third place, and $75,  went to Port Townsend High School student Kepler Edmundson.

The winning essays are reprinted here and on page A14.
