The U.S. Marine Corps was well represented Dec. 3 at the fundraising and toy collection event hosted by Jefferson Transit and the Port Townsend Kiwanis Club on behalf of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program.
“It went really well,” said Don Olsen, an event organizer with Port Townsend Kiwanis. “This year we had four of the Marine recruiters and 25 of their recruits, and their presence helped a lot.”
The fledgling Marines took donation canisters and stood at the street corner by Penny Saver Mart and by the Safeway store, and members of the public who were passing by responded.
“They filled the canisters,” Olsen noted. “People were really supportive.”
Overall, the program collected 400 new toys, 18 books, 60 stocking-stuffer gifts and $3,000 in cash.
Plus, the Mo-Chilli BBQ food truck was set up near the toy drive headquarters, and the business donated all of its proceeds for the day: $600. The Port Townsend Rotary Club was selling wreaths and donated $5 from each sale to the toy drive, $70 total.
“All of the money we raised will go for toys,” Olsen noted. “We supplement programs like Christmas for Children, Wounded Warrior, Dove House and Jumping Mouse when they need toys or money to buy toys.”
Along with it being the first year for the roadside toy drive not to be hindered by heavy rain, this year the Marines came out in force, with recruiters from Port Angeles, Silverdale and Whidbey Island, Olsen noted.
