A man who recently relocated to Port Townsend has been charged with robbery and assault after he allegedly stole a bicycle in downtown Port Townsend Aug. 14, according to the Port Townsend Police Department.
At about 5:45 p.m., Aug. 14, Mitchell Raymond Randall, 32, allegedly stole a bicycle from a man who had rented bicycles from The Broken Spoke bike shop.
Randall has been charged with first-degree robbery, harassment, threats to kill and three counts of fourth-degree assault, said Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney Michael Haas.
Randall’s next hearing in Jefferson County Superior Court is set for Sept. 8.
He is currently at Jefferson County Jail. Bail has been set at $30,000.
BIKE RENTED
The man who had rented bikes told police officers he was planning to ride with traveling companions around Port Townsend. He briefly left the bicycles outside his hotel. He reported to the bicycle shop that one of his rented bicycles had been stolen. Bicycle shop employees saw a man riding a bike that fit the description of the stolen bike. The man riding it was wearing a red hoodie and a blue cap, according to the police report, said Haas.
A police report indicates the shop owner tried to retrieve the bike from the man, and the man punched him in the face.
Witnesses came to the aid of the shop owner and tried to stop the man from riding away on the bike. At that point, the suspect allegedly punched a woman in the head, causing her to fall to the ground, a report said. He then punched another woman in the face.
One woman suffered bleeding and swelling to the head and face, according to police accounts.
Other witnesses came to the aid of the two women and tried to keep the man from fleeing until police had arrived.
Police caught up with the suspect on the beach, and he became agitated and began yelling, screaming and verbally threatening officers and citizens, according to the report Haas received.
The man, later identified as Randall, was arrested, taken to Jefferson Healthcare for evaluation and then transported to the jail in Port Hadlock.
All three victims were evaluated and treated by East Jefferson Fire Rescue, according to police accounts.
